Wombat Waddle

9. Februar 2008 von thomas

On Maria Island you can easily spot wombats. Since there is no “pest” like cats, dogs or foxes, they live in peace and happiness. Wombats are so cute like little teddies (however, Tasmanias Common Wombats are around 80cm long and weigh roughly 20kg).

Even if they are aggressive too each other (like on the picture below) they look so unruffled.

Wombat - Attack

As they have bad eyesight you can approach them like you would approach a Tyranosaurus Rex. Move gently and stop, if they look around.

As a modest Wombat expert I could fill books with my wide-ranging Wombat knowledge. And yes I’m a certified wombat expert! That’s because I got a Wombat sticker, after I could answer a Wombat question at the meeting with a National Park Ranger, faster then the other kids ;) )

But I don’t want to bore you and present a short list of wombat facts for a brief “shake-hands” with this fascinating creature:

  1. Wombats are marsupials. That means they have a pouch like Kangaroos, where their even more and so impossible cute offspring grows up.
  2. Closest relatives of wombats are Koalas. You can see it especially when Wombats walk or better waddle.
  3. Wombats live solitary in deep burrows, which they dig with their strong paws.

  4. Wombats are peaceful animals, which spend their time digging for roots and eating grass.
  5. Wombats are well protected. They have no neck, no tail, tiny ears and really thick fur, which they like to scratch.Wombat cratches itselfMoreover they have a horny plate at their buttocks, which they use to close their burrows. No enemy can get through it. And don’t crawl into a wombat burrow. They can dig themselves below you and press you against the ceiling until you die.Wombat
  6. Wombats can run up to 40 km per hour. One even overhauled once our car.
  7. Wombats mark everything within their territory what is elevated over the ground. Stones, sticks, or even mushroom. Ok, I helped the wombats here a bit. ;)
  8. Wombat poo has a cubical shape so it can’t roll away. Even from mushrooms. Moreover they have really economic digestion. Their poo is nothing barely more then pressed grass.

And especially the wombat poo caught my attention. I really adore it. Why? Read the coming post called “10 things you can do with wombat poo”.

*Update*: Manniac made a video with Wombats, Wombast and more Wombats! I think we experience right now the rise of Wombats as the most popular animals in the world! ;)

Keiner schreibt wie unendlich süß diese putzigen Viecher aussehen? Könnt ihr mir einen mitnehmen? Oder zwei?

Dann spar ich mir auch Heizkosten wenn ich deren Kot verheize. :)
